London-based startup 2050.cards, who created the first ‘mobile’ cards delivered phone-to-phone via WhatsApp, today announces that they have teamed up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to launch a first-of-its-kind digital Christmas card. Each bespoke digital card is sent directly from phone-to-phone via WhatsApp, MMS or Messenger, and 100% of proceeds go straight to the BHF.
‘eCards’ first appeared in the early 2000s with the rise of the internet. They fast became synonymous with email links to messy landing pages, adverts, and tacky videos. But as paper card sales decline and consumers care more about sustainability, digital cards are making a comeback.
2050.cards (founded in 2019), has disrupted the original ‘ecard’ model by creating ‘mobile-first’ cards delivered by Whatsapp, making it easier than ever to send someone special wishes. Focusing on sustainability, its digital cards avoid paper use, delivery vans and plastic packaging. In addition, it plants one tree for every 200 cards made, in partnership with the World Land Trust.
The BHF, whose vision is to ‘beat heartbreak forever’, raises money for research to find cures and treatments for heart and circulatory diseases. Its work over the last 60 years, which has halved deaths associated with heart and circulatory deaths, inspired the Christmas card story of a young girl enjoying a day out with her grandfather. The animation shows the two spending a quintessentially British day in the countryside, walking, tobogganing, and marvelling at the village lights.
By teaming up with 2050.cards, the BHF is showing a clear intent to embrace digital innovation and sustainability. Jaynee Samuel, Fundraising Manager at the BHF, said: “Each electronic card you send to a loved one this Christmas will help raise money for our life saving research – keeping more families together. With your help this Christmas – whether it’s volunteering some time, shopping at one of our stores or making a donation – we can support those who are wishing for a future free from heartbreak. We’re excited to be working with 2050.cards for a product that’s both innovative and good for the environment.”
Benjy Barkes, Co-Founder of 2050.cards, said: “It’s a privilege to be partnered with the BHF to give people a more sustainable alternative to paper cards this Christmas.”
