AMD announces new 7nm Ryzen notebook CPUs

AMD announces next-gen Ryzen laptop CPUs.

What you need to know

  • AMD announces new mobile Ryzen 4000 processors, including the new Ryzen 7 4800U and Ryzen 7 4800H.
  • These new Ryzen CPUs for notebooks are vastly improved on the previous generation.
  • Laptops with Ryzen 4000 series CPUs will begin to launch in Q1 2020.

AMD announced new processors at CES 2020 for the notebook form factor, showcasing the performance of the new Ryzen 7 4800U, rocking eight Zen 2 cores (with 16 threads), a base and boost clock speed of 1.8GHz up to 4.2GHz, and eight Radeon Vega cores for graphics processing.

This is all based on the newer 7nm manufacturing process with a TDP of just 15W. AMD also managed to improve battery life by offering up to 2x the performance per watt. We're excited to get our hands on laptops with these new Ryzen processors to see just how they compare against what we got with the Surface.

If you need a little more power than what the 4800U offers, AMD has the new Ryzen 7 4800H announced with eight cores, 16 threads, 2.9GHz clock speed (with a boost of 4.2GHz), and a TDP of 45W. What's interesting is AMD says this processor easily outperforms Intel's Core i7 9700K desktop CPU. That's pretty wild and we're stoked to get one in for testing.

First laptops with these new Ryzen mobile processors will launch in Q1 of 2020.
