Everything we know about the next Assassin's Creed

What would the new year be without an Assassin's Creed leaking early?

Ubisoft previously did away with the yearly Assassin's Creed releases after Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and since Odyssey released in 2018, we're due for a new entry to the franchise in 2020. There have been many rumors floating around, and the majority appear to be pure speculation with no ground to stand on — or downright false — while others have some merit. At the very least, you might want to brush up on your history involving Vikings.

What we know is true about the next Assassin's Creed

We don't officially know anything. Ubisoft hasn't fully revealed or even mentioned, what the next Assassin's Creed will be like.

What could be true about the next Assassin's Creed

I almost put this in the former category of what we know to be true. I realize I'm stretching the definition of the word "know" seeing as Ubisoft has not confirmed the next Assassin's Creed game yet, but judging by Kotaku's track record with leaks, it's all but certain.

There is credible information from two sources speaking to Kotaku that the next Assassin's Creed is Vikings-themed. This was backed up after a posted in Ubisoft's The Division 2 appeared to show a Norse man under the word Valhalla, and he looks to be holding a Piece of Eden. Ubisoft has been known to drop teasers for its next projects into games like this, as was the case with Pioneer, which was unfortunately canceled.

Setting

Odds are that since it will most likely follow Vikings, we'll probably be exploring some Scandinavian or Nordic countries like Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, or Sweden. When it comes to specifics, we don't know which locations may or may not be in it.

We don't know a time period either, but considering Vikings were prominent between the late 8th to late 11th centuries, expect sometime between then.

Gameplay

The gameplay will likely be more similar to that of Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey than its other predecessors with a heavy focus on RPG elements. Dialogue options with branching narratives may return.

Release date and platforms

The next Assassin's Creed will probably release sometime in Fall 2020 judging from past precedent. If Ubisoft doesn't want another Unity/Rogue debacle, the game could be released on both current-gen and next-gen platforms along with PC.

Debunked leaks and rumors about the next Assassin's Creed

A lot of those "leaks" and rumors you've been seeing lately about a game called Assassin's Creed Ragnarok probably aren't true. An anonymous 4chan user appears to have pulled one over on the community eagerly awaiting the next Assassin's Creed entry, but much of what was stated isn't true.

The details of this fake leak were compiled on Reddit, but I'll post a few of the more interesting bits that got people talking. Here's what the "leaker" on 4chan had to say:

  • Will launch on Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
  • Officially announced in February at the upcoming PlayStation event, release date September 29th, 2020.
  • Up to 4 player drop in drop out co-op like Ghost Recon Wildlands.
  • Player can only play as a single character, Jora, who can be male or female.
  • Jora led a small band of 4 during their adventures which is why other players can drop in and out for co-op.
  • Continues heavy RPG mechanics now including different classes and mild skill tree changes based on class. Player class can be changed by a specific character.
  • Each weapon can have runes added, be upgraded, and durability increased.
  • Weapon durability does now come into play, forcing players to use their weapon pool more effectively and forced to manage a smaller inventory that can be upgraded.
  • The map is massive. Like all of northern Europe. My source mentioned big cities being York, London, Paris, and Kiev. Every kingdom was meant to be really unique.
  • Game begins in 845 CE at the siege of Paris with you playing as Jora's father, Rorik who's an ally of the Viking leader Ragnar.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, also known as ZhugeEX, debunked these rumors on ResetEra.

For what it's worth. All of the new AC leaks so far have been incorrect. It's not even called Ragnarok. Sure. Some of the details are right. Like improved combat or whatever. But in general, they're not that accurate.

Whatever this blurry potato quality picture is supposed to be, it isn't the next Assassin's Creed. Don't believe everything you see on 4chan, kids.

And as for the apparent retail listings of an Assassin's Creed Ragnarok, those are all probably fake too.

The series' deepest foray into RPG yet

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was the most ambitious entry in the series to date, and it paid off tremendously. A sprawling world full of activities and secrets awaits you in Ancient Greece.
