Microsoft Edge has a new tab page – here's how to customize it

Microsoft Edge has a new tab page, and in this guide, we'll show you the steps to customize the experience to fit your preferences.

On Windows 10, the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge has a new tab page experience that is far more customizable than the one available in the legacy version.

Although during the initial setup, you get the option to choose a new tab layout, if you're not happy with your current configuration, the new Microsoft Edge offers plenty of settings to personalize the page with background images, quick links, and content around the web.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to customize and make the most out of the new tab page available with the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge.

How to change new tab layout on Microsoft Edge

To change the new tab page layout on Chromium Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the Settings and more (three-dotted) button from the top-right.
  3. Select the Settings option.
  4. Click on New tab page.

Quick tip: You can also access these customizations from the settings (gear) button on any new tab.

  5. Click the Customize button.

  6. Select the new page layout:

    • Focused – offers a design without a background image, search box, quick links with your most frequent sites. Also, if you scroll down, you'll have news tailored to your liking.
    • Inspirational – provides a similar experience as the Focused layout, but it features a background image that changes daily. If you scroll down, you'll find news headlines tailored to your taste.
    • Informational – features a search box, quick links, and background image, but it focuses on content around the web.
  7. Use the Language & content drop-down menu to select the language and region of the content that you'll see when opening a new tab.

Once you complete the steps, every time you open a new tab, the page will use the layout that you customized.

How to set custom new tab layout on Microsoft Edge

If none of the layouts fits your preferences, the browser also allows you to configure a custom layout with only the blocks you want to see on the page.

To configure a custom new tab layout for Edge on Windows 10, use these steps:

  7. Turn on or off the Show quick links toggle switch to show or hide the the links for your frequent sites.

  8. Turn on or off the Image of the day toggle switch to remove the background from the tab page (similar to the Focused layout).
  9. Use the Content drop-down menu to remove completely or change how news should appear on new tabs.

After you complete the steps, the new tab page will use your custom configuration.

You can further personalize the experience by choosing the topics that you're interested in seeing content from the Microsoft News service.

To personalize the new tab content on Microsoft Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Use the Ctrl + T keyboard shortcut (or click the plus + button in the top-left) to start a new tab page.
  3. Click the Personalize button in the headlines row. (You may need to scroll down the page if you don't see the option.)

  4. Under the "My Interests" section, click the checkmark for the content that isn't of interest to you.

  5. Use the left pane menu to navigate through the different topics (business, entertainment, health, local, etc.).
  6. Click the plus (+) button for each item.

  7. Click on Information cards.
  8. Turn off the toggle switch for the cards (Weather, Sports, and Money) you're not interested in seeing in the new tab page.

If the content still not relevant to your liking in the new tab page, on each story, you can click the settings (three-dotted) button with options to hide the story or publisher.
