Does The Division 2 support cross platform play on Xbox One?

Best answer: No. Right now there are no plans for The Division 2 to be cross-platform compatible. Ubisoft has allowed cross-play before on VR titles, but there is no evidence that The Division 2 will join them.

What is Cross-play?

Cross-platform play is the current holy grail of gaming and would allow players to play multiplayer games with their friends regardless of the gaming platform. That means PlayStation players can play with Xbox players, and Xbox players can play with PC players and so on.

Back in the day, there were a lot of technical reasons why this was difficult, but with today's games, the only stumbling blocks are the console manufacturers and sometimes the publisher. While Sony has allowed two games, Fortnite and Rocket League, to use its cross-play system, it's still trialing it, making sure that it doesn't affect its business in a negative way.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is all in for cross-play. It started with its Play Anywhere initiative and was embraced with games like Minecraft, Rocket League, and Fortnite. Microsoft is even looking to bring its Xbox Live platform to other consoles.

What is The Division 2?

The Division 2 is Ubisoft's sequel to the smash hit The Division. Set in a Washington D.C. that is collapsing in on itself, you are part of a crack force sent to take the streets back from the gangs and rabid people that now live there.

According to our own Russell Holly, The Division 2 is a near perfect sequel to the original and is definitely worthy of your time and money.

Could The Division 2 get cross-play?

Yes, it could. If Sony decides The Division is a big enough game to warrant cross-play it could turn the function on and allow Ubisoft to let all us players play together. It's unlikely though since Sony has become mute on more games getting cross-play support lately.

Sony isn't the only deciding factor. Ubisoft has allowed cross-play before. Star Trek: Bridge Crew is cross-play for VR headsets and it works amazingly well through the Ubisoft Club, but that game has very simple controls. The Division 2 would need separate servers for keyboard and mouse players as well as universal servers. There is a lot to work out and maybe Ubisoft just won't want to waste all that time and money.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot previously stated, however, that Ubisoft wants all of its PvP (player-vs-player) games to eventually support cross-play. On top of that, Rainbow Six Siege is getting cross-play at some point down the line. So even though it's not happening right now, don't lose hope.

I don't think we have to worry about Microsoft not wanting to support cross-play, it's pretty obvious by now that it's ready for every game to play nice on any console since it's making a different kind of ecosystem right now.
