Hey! I was lucky enough to sit down with ROARRRRR founder Philipp Schoeffman at Affiliate World Europe in Barcelona.
There we were, a couple of marketers, but we put tactics and strategy aside to talk about something more important:
Are you having fun?
Do you enjoy the work you do every day, and does that work serve your greater interests in life – i.e., your relationships, your hobbies, and your physical and emotional well being?
If not — and I mean no offense by this — then what are you doing? In my educated opinion, I sincerely believe that you have your priorities mixed up.
Chasing success to the detriment of everything else in your life is a mistake. I know plenty of people who do it and they are mostly miserable, shackled to a business they don’t love simply because it makes them money.
Here’s the truth: success is a more popular but less fulfilling game than having fun.
More popular because that’s what we see in the mainstream media: rich people on Instagram goin’ hard with Lambos and Rolexes; less fulfilling because success alone will not make you happy. As someone who grew up poor and who now has more money than he needs, I’ve learned that success can bring you comfort, but not happiness.
And to those who say I’ll work now and have fun later!, again, I think this is a mistake. If you spend years hustling and grinding, you will train yourself to be stressed out. You will not suddenly feel happy and fulfilled when your business hits 8 figures – trust me.
If you can’t be happy here and now, you will not be happy there and then.
So what’s the solution? How can you prioritize fun and start enjoying your business more?
Follow these 3 tips:
1. Approve of Your Circumstances
It all starts with your mindset. Look at your life and try to find it right. What do you enjoy about it? How can you enjoy it even more? If you believe your life is bad now and will only be good when you are successful, that’s a losing strategy. Start by deciding things are good, then you can focus on making them even better.
2. Set Strong Boundaries
Parkinson’s Law states that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. If you let it, your business will bleed into other parts of your life and distract you from what’s truly important. Working all the time will also lead to burnout. That’s why it’s important to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life and stick to them. Then you must…
3. Be Eternally Vigilant
You have to be ready to show up every day and put attention on the things that matter — i.e., your relationships, your hobbies, and your physical and emotional well being. These things don’t always demand your attention like work does. They don’t always text or email or ping you on Slack. They can fall by the wayside if you don’t actively put your attention on them.
I hope these 3 tips help you prioritize fun and build a business that adds to the other good things in your life.
