by Craig Goodliffe, CEO of Cyberbacker
Virtual assistants are everywhere, and they are dynamically improving the lives of business professionals, at the same time, obtaining jobs globally where work of this nature is otherwise hard to come by. Years ago, when I founded Cyberbacker, I was inspired by the lives of people I saw first-hand in the Philippines who were living in poverty and needed jobs just like the ones my company and I offer every day. Over the last four years since we founded Cyberbacker, we have developed a proprietary system of not only interviewing, but fully vetting superior candidates for virtual assistant positions all over the world. So far, we’ve employed over one thousand Cyberbackers and we’re still growing strong. There’s a secret to our success because we’ve time-tested the challenges that most people face when hiring a virtual assistant.
To help overcome these barriers, here are the five things people need to know when hiring a virtual assistant.
1. Qualifying quality candidates.
In nations like the Philippines, not everyone has access to the same technology. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to make sure your candidates have the equipment and internet connection needed to work remotely.
2. The importance of training and management.
You can’t just hire a virtual assistant and expect them to know right away what to do and how to do it. A good virtual assistant is only as good as their training and management which has to be continual.
3. Set clear expectations.
Virtual assistants aren’t mind readers. How can someone do the job right when they aren’t told how? There are many barriers with working remotely to begin with. On top of not knowing what is expected, don’t make distance a challenging factor. Always outline every aspect of the job, for optimal performance.
4. Take time to understand the cultural and social differences.
Not only are your virtual assistants living overseas, but they are also living in a completely different culture. It is important to understand the socio-economic differences and even cultural barriers that separate us and find that middle ground, so you can work together to achieve the same goal.
5. Get it all in writing.
Be sure you have an established legal entity in the country of your virtual assistant’s origin to protect you. To paraphrase Section 150 of the Philippines commercial code, if the person you hire steals anything from you, you may not be able to get it back without a legal structure in place. A company like Cyberbacker, experienced in this area, can help you avoid what could become a major legal headache.
Most of all, be patient. All good things come to those who wait. You might have to go through a thousand candidates to find the perfect virtual assistant for you. My company and our Cyberbacker franchise partners do that leg work for you because you’re already busy enough as it is, that’s why you need a virtual assistant to begin with. Hire a company like mine who has a time-tested and proven method for vetting amazing candidates for virtual assistant roles all over the world.
I could go on and on about why a Cyberbacker is better than a virtual assistant, but I’m a little partial to our methods, and your time could be better spent visiting Cyberbacker.com to learn more. If you had a Cyberbacker, they’d already be doing this for you.
