Microsoft acknowledged an issue with the Windows Installer last week. The problem can prevent affected apps from opening after an update or repair has been attempted. While there are mitigations and workarounds for this issue, Microsoft is testing a permanent fix. Windows 11 build 22000.348 includes a fix for the problem and is available for Insiders in the Release Preview and Beta Channels. If all goes smoothly, the fix should arrive quickly for general users of Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Some Kaspersky apps are among those affected by the bug, though the issue can affect other apps as well. Kaspersky shared the following details in a support document:
After the installation of a Windows update Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Windows keeps functioning correctly and the security of the system remains intact. However errors may occur at attempts to upgrade the application, install a private patch or change the scope of the application components.
We recommend to temporarily refrain from installing the Windows updates listed below. If the updates are already installed, use one of these solutions below depending on the issue you are having.
The problem can affect systems running Windows 11 and several versions of Windows 10. Microsoft shared a complete list of all affected platforms:
Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10, version 2004; Windows 10, version 1909; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB; Windows 8.1; Windows 7 SP1
Server: Windows Server 2022; Windows Server, version 20H2; Windows Server, version 2004; Windows Server, version 1909; Windows Server, version 1809; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012 R2; Windows Server 2012; Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1; Windows Server 2008 SP2
Windows 11 build 22000.348 also includes all of the changes seen in build 22000.346, which rolled out to the Beta and Release Preview Channels on November 12, 2021.
Assuming that the fixes work as intended, they should make their way to general availability in the near future.
