Startup one-liner:
Data B is the developer of Pcanpi, an AI-powered English grammar checker and proofreader for non-native English speakers
Problem the startup solves:
Many non-native English speakers often make grammar mistakes and use unnatural expressions when they speak or write in English. Data B aims to solve this problem by developing Pcanpi, an AI-powered English grammar checker and proofreader for non-native English speakers.
Progress and current status:
We launched Pcanpi in October 2021. We began to see some customer traction in September 2022. Our MAU grew 450% monthly between August and October 2022. Our users say they love Pcanpi because it provides a better experience than Grammarly for non-native English speakers. We plan to prove the product-market-fit by acquiring more users and paying customers by the end of 2022.
What is a crazy story about the startup?:
We overcame Grammarly in grammar correction accuracy because we were better positioned to do so. Grammarly’s users are mostly native English speakers, therefore, collecting data on grammar errors is difficult. Moreover, their algorithm should be conservative to minimize backfire from native English speakers. But our users are non-native English speakers, so we can easily collect data on broken English to train an aggressive algorithm without worrying about backlash because they know their English is not perfect.
We achieved a monthly MAU growth rate of 450% between August and October 2022 without spending a dollar on paid marketing. We rely on SEO and word-of-mouth, and will continuously focus on these areas in user acquisition.
What is a company the startup looks up to, and why?:
We respect Grammarly because it paved the way to the major adoption of AI writing assistants. Grammarly innovated in many different areas, such as browser extension and tone detection technologies.
The company in four years will be…
In four years, the company will still be growing rapidly, offering a more accurate grammar checker and other writing assistant tools such as a paraphraser to help non-native English speakers write and speak in more natural-sounding English.
We dream of a world where people can freely communicate without miscommunication caused by language barriers.
