Belk has opened its first outlet store.
The regional department store converted one of its locations in Greeneville, Tennessee, into a new Belk Outlet, which sells clearance items from its larger retail locations. With the new layout the store has been able to triple its product assortment.
“Greeneville gets to be the place to pioneer this concept,” a company spokesperson said via email.
Belk Outlet opened on Jan. 30, with a grand opening event planned for Saturday.
“Right now we’re focused on this Belk Outlet and seeing how our customers respond to it,” a spokesperson said when asked if the concept would expand. “We’re confident that our customers are going to like it because of the fantastic prices and the expanded product assortment this location will now be able to accommodate.”
The outlet location does not sell beauty or fine jewelry products, and all sales are final.
Belk this fall named Don Hendricks as its chief executive officer. He was acting as its interim CEO for nearly five months, and had served as the company’s chief operating officer since 2016.
As interim CEO, Hendricks replaced Nir Patel, who was CEO of the department store for less than a year before resigning. Patel left the department store to become the chief operating officer of GameStop.
Private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which owns retailers such as Staples, Express, Stuart Weitzman, Talbots and Hot Topic, acquired Belk in 2015 for $3 billion.
The Belk Outlet is located at 1367 Tusculum Blvd.
