Does SEO Still Work? Our Data Says “Yes But”

Does SEO still work? As someone who has written relatively highly cited, highly linked, highly read, etc. content since 2011 … I’ll say … “Yes But”

Yes But

What do I mean? Well yes content marketing and SEO still clearly are the magic and miracles of the internet. Google and now other GPT-related engines will find your content on their own, and if it’s truly high value, ultimately promote it for you. For free. And to potential customers! Boom.

That’s a gift. At a high level, as big a gift in 2024 as 2011.

Organic Search remains our #1 source of SaaStr readers for 13 years straight:

But, I can also tell you what our data says. Which is that we have literally 100x more quality content than 2011-2014. Our content page ranks remain high. And we’ve actually increased our output. We now put out 20+ high-quality pieces of content a week, 4 good newsletters, have 1m social media followers, today, etc.

And roughly … our SEO is the same.

All that work to sort of stay in the same place in terms of organic drive viewers, readers, traffic, etc.  Down in fact, if you include “Organic Social”, as Twitter/X and LinkedIn posts with external links now are essentially buried and don’t really work.

A reminder I guess that the marketing playbook still works, all of it still works. Just so much of it takes far more planning, effort, and energy to work as it used to.

If you’re just phoning it in on content, on SEO, on webinars, on events, etc.  Don’t expect it to work in 2024.
