Most of the best VP of Sales have been fired once.
It’s not always on their LinkedIn, they don’t always bring it up, but it’s part of it. Sometimes, it’s for a mismatch of skills vs. opportunity. You can crush it one place and struggle in another. Sometimes, for the best sales leaders, it’s a mismatch on passion.
And that one time is often good — for you. It puts a chip on their shoulder. So does being topped, or passed over. But being fired once, even after they crushed it at the prior role? It produces … drive.
So don’t run from a great VP of Sales that was fired. Calmly dig in and learn. And just make sure it wasn’t … every role. That most of the time, they did crush it. As an SDR, an AE, a Director, etc.
One mis-jump, one mistake though is part of the territory for a great VP of Sales.
A series of them is part of the territory for a mediocre one.
